Collaboration in Action: The Mozambique Wildlife Alliance (Full Documentary: 32 minutes)
A Strategic Partnership for Conservation
The Mozambique Wildlife Alliance (MWA) was established as a local non-profit organization tailored to Mozambique's conservation needs.
MWA grew out of Saving the Survivors' (STS) operations in the country. The rationale was to create a dedicated, independent organization able to work with a broad array of partners without being tied to any single organization’s branding, a neutral entity operating under a mandate from ANAC (Mozambique's National Administration of Conservation Areas).
Operations are headed by Dr João Almeida.
Mission
MWA's mission is to create a platform for collaborative veterinary and conservation actions in Mozambique — connecting and supporting partners, promoting coexistence between communities and wildlife, and increasing conservation impact for people, wildlife, and the habitats they share across the country.
Approach
Their model is built on Integrated Conservation & Development (ICD), which they see as essential to achieving both biodiversity conservation and improved livelihoods for local communities. They come from a wildlife veterinary and law enforcement background.
What they do on the ground
Their work spans three broad areas:
- Local development — protecting farming families, creating conservation jobs, HWC mitigation training, community sensibilization, and support for government and community decision-making
- On-field response — HWC response, community and corridor mapping, wildlife data gathering, One Health projects, and counter-IWT (illegal wildlife trade) work
- Biodiversity conservation — collaring, translocations, treating injured animals, dehorning, and building a wildlife DNA database
The alliance maintains operational independence from government expenditure, sustaining its activities through funding from nine organizations.
With a staff of 32 dedicated professionals, 29 Mozambicans and three expatriates, MWA brings local expertise and international experience to conservation efforts nationwide.
