Collaring a Spotted Hyena (15-minute Video)

Of all the animals that the Phalaborwa Natural Heritage Foundation rescues from wire snares, the spotted hyena is at the top of the list.

Hyenas get caught in snares more than other animals because the smell of rotting carcasses attracts them, and they end up in snares that are still active.

Eugene Troskie, founder of the Phalaborwa Natural Heritage Foundation, received a report from one of the wildlife reserves they work in of a hyena with a wire snare around its mouth.

Eugene took his team into the reserve to try to dart the animal and remove the snare.

Part of the foundation's work is to monitor hyena movement across the region. Eugene thought that it would be a good idea to put a satellite collar on the animal if they could find and dart it.
